10 Healthy Snacks You Need If You’re Trying To Avoid Sugar

Eating on the go has to be one of the most challenging aspects of cleaning up your diet. No matter how well stocked your fridge is with fresh vegetables and healthy protein; you will still need healthy and easy options for your busiest days.

Eating on the go has to be one of the most challenging aspects of cleaning up your diet. No matter how well-stocked your fridge is with fresh vegetables and healthy protein; you will still need healthy and easy options for your busiest days.

The big problem with snacks is that most of the time they’re loaded with sugar, and the ingredients aren’t what I would describe as ‘natural and clean.’ These snacks spike your blood sugar, leave you feeling hungry an hour later, and ramp up your junk food cravings. At the same time, skipping snacks isn’t really an option, either. Letting yourself get too hungry is setting yourself up for overeating or overindulging.

I started personal training at 17. The last two years of high school I lived by myself. With a Bowflex Ultimate 2 parked in my living room and a couch next to it as a bed, I trained clients before and after school. So, I’ve been in this business for a long time. I’ve had the chance to try a lot of snacks marketed at consumers with fitness goals. I’ve tasted a lot of good and bad products. I’ve often been frustrated with the nutrition facts on snacks that claim to be ‘good’ for you but are loaded with refined sugar or carbohydrates.

There’s good news – healthy snacks don’t have to be tasteless or boring.

Through a lot of trial and error, I think I’ve found the best of the best. Here are 10 healthy snack options you need to know about.

Legendary Foods Nuts and Nut Butters

Are you living a paleo, keto, or low-carb lifestyle? If your answer is yes, nuts and nut butter are probably one of your favorite snacks. Shannan Penna, the creator of the world-famous Quest Bar, her husband, and their business partner, started Legendary Foods as a new company focused on nuts and nut butter that are all-natural, gluten-free, with no added sugar.

Legendary Foods creates healthy and flavorful snack options without using sugar. Their products are sweetened with erythritol, which is a natural, alternative sweetener. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol naturally found in small amounts in some fruits and fermented foods. While real sugar has 4 calories per gram and xylitol 2.4 calories per gram (60% of the calories of sugar), erythritol is much lower in calories at 0.24 calories per gram (6% that of sugar). This means erythritol has about 60 – 80% sweetness of glucose for the same volume. The best part about erythritol is that unlike sugar and many artificial sweeteners, this sugar alternative does not induce an insulin response or change glucose metabolism in the body.

With 13 grams of fat, six grams of protein, and only one net carb you can feel guiltless as you munch on any of the almond snacks Legendary Foods has to offer. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never liked almonds. Thanks to the excellent tasting, a wide range of flavor combinations, this problem is now solved for me. Not only did I enjoy their almond snacks, the first day I almost ate an entire bag of the ‘Cheddar Bacon’ flavored almonds!

I saved the nut butter for last because they blew me away! When my box of products came in the mail from Legendary Foods, the first thing that caught my eye was the wide variety of unusual nut butter flavor combinations. It’s not every day you see ‘Blueberry Cinnamon Bun’ flavored almond butter! I didn’t know what to expect from a flavor like this! As a former skeptic, I can tell you it tastes amazing! If that’s not enough, Legendary Foods offers Pecan Pie Almond Butter, Apple Pie Almond Butter, and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Almond butter.

Are you tired of dull snack options? Thanks to Quest Creator Shannan Penna, Legendary Foods has come to your rescue! Shannan has turned classical nut butter into uniquely powerful flavor combinations that will help add variation and a much-needed ‘spark’ to your boring snack routine.

SFH Pure Whey Protein

It’s very difficult to find a quality protein powder you can trust as being ‘clean and pure.’

Well… ‘Pure’ is the perfect word for this protein powder. It’s made from the whey of free-range, grass-fed cows.

SFH Pure uses stevia to sweeten their products. Stevia is a natural sweetener that is safe for adults and children. Stevia is originally from South America, though it now grows throughout the world. It is naturally very sweet and considered 100 to 200 times sweeter than sugar. Like Erythritol, the best part about Stevia is that it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels like sugar and other artificial sweeteners do.

Tired of choking down protein powder after an intense workout? Problem solved. SFH Pure tastes fantastic and is a great treat for anyone in the family. Like any good protein powder, SFH Pure Whey is low carb, only netting 3 grams of carbs per serving. It is also low in fat, with 2 grams of fat in each serving. A single scoop of SFH Pure contains 23 grams of protein.

Primal Kitchen Bars

A protein bar that is low carb and packed with hydrolyzed collagen protein is a dream come true. Hydrolyzed collagen doesn’t just have a high protein content; it is widely believed to encourage the growth of lean muscle mass. If you’re a fitness fanatic, you need Primal Kitchen bars handy.

Available in flavors like Dark Chocolate Almond and Macadamia Sea Salt, Primal Kitchen Bars contain 15 grams of protein and 16 to 18 grams of fat. Considering how awesome they taste, it’s shocking that these bars only net 8 carbs!

EPIC Bars

These bars live up to their name and are truly EPIC! We all know that traditional jerky can be boring, tough, and loaded with preservatives. Who needs that? Rich in protein and low in sugar, EPIC Bars are made from a variety of meats like grass-fed beef, all-natural chicken, and wild-caught salmon. They’re grain-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free, too.

With between 8 and 15 grams of protein in each bar and only one gram of carbs, these jerky bars are really something to brag about. Bison Bacon Cranberry? Yes, please. Lamb Currant Mint? I’ll take two!

Quest Protein Chips

Sometimes, you need a little crunch in your life. Step away from the potato chips and reach for these protein-packed chips from Quest, instead. Quest has long been recognized for their clean, high protein snacks, but they’ve certainly outdone themselves with these chips. If you live a life on-the-go and are try to avoid carbs, this crunchy snack is high protein and low carb, which almost seems too good to be true.

Whether you’re into Cheddar and Sour Cream or BBQ, you can snack without guilt knowing these chips have 21 grams of protein and only 2 net carbs.

Jilz Crackers

Here’s another crunchy snack you don’t want to miss. What if I told you about crackers that are gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, soy-free, AND corn-free? Yes. You can thank Jilz. These crackers are an excellent option for anyone dealing with allergies or food sensitivities.

Jilz crackers feel like your favorite high-carb snack, but they’re so much better. They are made from organic ingredients like flax seeds, chia seeds, and apple cider vinegar. Jilz crackers have five net carbs, three grams of protein, and eight grams of fat. They’re available in the flavors Tuscan, Mediterranean, and Cracked Pepper and Sea Salt.

Quest Protein Cookies

Who needs a cheat day with protein-packed goodies like the Quest Protein Cookies? Because these cookies are packed with fiber and sweetened with Stevia and Erythritol, they only net nine grams of carbs. They also contain Milk and Whey Protein Isolates, which explains why they have 15 grams of protein in a single cookie. These aren’t your grandma’s chocolate chip cookies.

These soft and chewy cookies won’t feel like a healthy snack. And, with options like Peanut Butter Cookie, Chocolate Chip, and Oatmeal Raisin, they probably have your favorite flavor in stock. Quest Protein Cookies can crush your cravings and this healthy snack option is one of the best alternatives to ‘cheating’ I’ve found.

Primal Fuel Whey Protein

This protein powder is another favorite from Primal Kitchen. I love everything this company is doing! Primal Fuel is a whey protein with super clean ingredients like whey isolate, coconut milk, chicory root, and stevia. You don’t have to worry about what you’re drinking when you make yourself a post-workout snack, and you don’t have to worry about going hungry.

A single serving of Primal Fuel has 20 grams of protein and 8 grams of fat. With only 4 to 5 grams of carbs, this is a great low-carb snack. Choose from Chocolate Coconut or Vanilla Coconut – they both taste amazing!

Bulletproof Bars

Have you ever eaten a protein bar and after 45-minutes notice you’re already hungry again? You’ll feel satisfied and invincible if you keep these healthy protein bars handy on your busiest days. Each Bulletproof bar is loaded with 12 grams of protein and 14 grams of fat, so you know you’ll stay full while you’re on the go. What’s impressive about these bars is that they are made with Bulletproof’s Brain Octane oil, which means you’re eating a healthy fat that encourages mental clarity throughout your busy day.

Bulletproof bars have only 8 net carbs because they’re sweetened with stevia and have five grams of fiber. They’re available in great-tasting flavors like Vanilla Shortbread and Cafe Latte.

SFH Fuel Energy Supplement

As if creating a killer, low-carb protein powder wasn’t enough, SFH makes energy-boosting protein powder, too. What sets SFH Fuel apart from other protein powders is that is packed with healthy fats from MCTs and has added fiber. This is the kind of protein powder that will keep you full and fuel you with the energy you need between meals to keep up with your busy and active lifestyle.

SFH Fuel is available in Strawberry and Coconut and only has four grams of net carbs in each serving. A single serving has 19 grams of protein and 4.5 grams of fat.

Whether you want to eat healthier, lose weight, or add lean muscle mass to your body, planning ahead is key. Keeping healthy snacks on hand is just one more you can equip yourself to succeed in your fitness goals.
